Terms of Service

Last Updated: January 1, 2025

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of PDFShot, an HTML-to-PDF conversion API service. By accessing or using PDFShot, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

1. Service Description

PDFShot provides an API for converting HTML content and URLs into PDF files. The service includes:

  • A REST API endpoint for programmatic PDF generation
  • A dashboard for managing API keys and viewing usage

Generated PDFs are delivered through signed download URLs.

2. Account Registration

To use PDFShot, you must create an account.

Requirements:

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • You must provide a valid email address

Your responsibilities:

  • Keep your login credentials secure
  • Keep your API keys confidential
  • Notify us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access
  • You are responsible for all activity under your account

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

3. API Keys and Access

API keys authenticate your requests to the PDFShot API.

  • Keep keys secret. Treat API keys like passwords. Do not embed them in client-side code, commit them to version control, or share them publicly.
  • Rotate compromised keys. If a key is exposed, revoke it immediately from your dashboard and create a new one.
  • One key per application. Use separate keys for different applications or environments to limit exposure.

You are responsible for all API calls made with your keys, regardless of who made them.

4. Acceptable Use

You may use PDFShot to generate PDFs from HTML content you have the right to use.

You agree NOT to:

  • Submit content that is illegal, harmful, defamatory, or infringes on others' rights
  • Distribute malware, phishing content, or deceptive materials
  • Attempt to circumvent rate limits, security measures, or access controls
  • Overload the service with excessive requests designed to degrade performance
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code from the service
  • Resell or redistribute the service without authorization
  • Use the service to violate any applicable law or regulation

We reserve the right to suspend access for violations without prior notice.

5. Billing and Payment

PDFShot uses usage-based pricing.

Pricing structure:

  • Free tier: 5 render minutes per month (no credit card required)
  • Paid usage: $0.20 per render minute after the free tier
  • Billing precision: Usage is metered by the millisecond for accuracy

Billing details:

  • Payments are processed through Stripe
  • Usage is calculated from the total processing time of your API requests
  • Invoices are generated monthly for usage exceeding the free tier
  • All prices are in US dollars (USD)

Refunds:

  • No refunds are provided for consumed usage
  • Unused free tier minutes do not roll over to the next month
  • If you believe there is a billing error, contact us within 30 days

6. Data Handling and Retention

We process your content solely to provide the PDF conversion service.

Content handling:

  • Submitted HTML content is processed in memory and not stored permanently
  • Generated PDFs are stored temporarily with a 1-hour time-to-live (TTL)
  • After 1 hour, PDFs are automatically deleted from our systems
  • We do not access or review your content except to provide the service or investigate abuse

Logs and metadata:

  • We retain request logs (timestamps, response codes, processing times) for debugging and billing
  • Logs do not contain the content of your HTML submissions
  • Log retention follows our Privacy Policy

Your responsibility:

  • You are responsible for the content you submit
  • You must have the right to use and convert any content you send to the API
  • You must comply with applicable laws regarding the content you process

7. HIPAA Compliance

PDFShot is designed to support HIPAA-compliant workflows for healthcare customers.

Business Associate Agreement (BAA)

If you process Protected Health Information (PHI) through PDFShot, you must request a BAA before transmitting any PHI. Contact support@pdfshot.com to request a BAA.

Do not send PHI until a BAA is in place.

How We Handle PHI

  • Transient processing only: PHI is processed in memory and not stored permanently
  • 1-hour TTL: Generated PDFs containing PHI are deleted within 1 hour
  • Encryption in transit: All API communication uses HTTPS/TLS encryption
  • No PHI in logs: We do not log the content of your submissions

Your Responsibilities

If you use PDFShot to process PHI, you must:

  • Sign a BAA with PDFShot before transmitting PHI
  • Ensure you have proper authorization to transmit the PHI
  • Use HTTPS for all API requests (HTTP is not supported)
  • Download and store generated PDFs in your own HIPAA-compliant systems before the 1-hour TTL expires
  • Maintain your own audit trails as required by HIPAA
  • Notify us immediately of any suspected breach involving PHI

Technical Safeguards

PDFShot implements the following technical safeguards:

  • AWS infrastructure with signed BAA
  • Encryption in transit (TLS 1.2+)
  • Automatic deletion after 1-hour TTL
  • MFA available for all user accounts
  • No persistent storage of submitted content

For healthcare workloads, we recommend using dedicated API keys for PHI workflows.
